I'm going to say this one more time!!
STOP KILLING SNAKES!!!
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! take the time to READ the site and LOOK at the gallery.
Killing snakes is unnecessary, bad for the environment, and depending on the species can be dangerous!!!!! Read the Site News before this one-ALL OF IT!! |
Posted: 08/23/05 Subject: Warning-Be on the look out for non-native reptiles |
So far over the last week -- 3 alligators have been spotted in PA-2 were caught. There is an escaped Burmese Python. (check goodle news for these articles or your local newspaper)If you see such an animal-take a photo-send it here for ID or just call the police or local animal control or 911 and they will tell you what to do or who to call.
Many non-native reptiles are being turned loose or have escaped recently. Some are being abandoned at Wildlife Centers (which is -I suppose better)
On to natives-in these dry conditions-snakes will seek out water sources such as gardens, ponds, streams, swimming pools, fountains, etc. To help keep them out of your way-I suggest putting a swallow bowl of water away from your home. You'll be doing both them and yourself a favor.
****Make sure to change the water each day to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in it.****
There seems to be alot of confusion right now between Hognose Snakes which are virtually harmless and Timber Rattlesnakes. Please look at both galleries carefully. If you are still unsure-send a photo or sketch to tokay@ptd.net
please don't send me photos of snakes you've killed....sigh....it depresses me alot.
****NOTE-it is ILLEGAL to kill Timber Rattlesnakes without a permit and even with a permit you may only kill one. There is a fine for doing this and most people tell other people that they did it-so someone will find out. So you have been warned. All reptiles in PA are protected to some extent-keep that in mind. |

"Commonly Encountered Pennsylvania Spiders
(and two rarely encountered but medically important species)"
Link is:

Many Thanks!!
The reason the Brown Recluse was included is for people who are members who live outside of PA and are more likely to encounter them but in PA you may encounter one that inported so it's good to have more info on them.
I think this page is important for everyone to read. It's a great page on PA spiders and medical implications. (with photos of each species)

Posted: 08/26/05 Subject: The Gallery |
The Gallery is an important and useful tool for Identification. (and is updated almost daily)I've made sure there is at least one image of EVERY snake native to PA. If what you've seen isn't there-check the gallery called "other" if you still can't find it-send a photo or sketch or FULL description to: tokay@ptd.net. jpg format works best. I've gotten some great descriptions lately where I have no question of what the snake is-keep up the great work!!
Also-if you are a member-you can upload a photo in the visitor's gallery for ID also. |
Posted: 08/27/05 Subject: Filters on e-mail |
It's sort of hard to reply to some e-mails that have filters on them-I assume to keep out SPAM-please let me know-when requesting info if you have one of these so I can fill out the request form to allow the answer to be returned ASAP.
If you receive no reply-it's the above problem in my way as I check my e-mail and answer questions several times a day.
Alternate e-mail outside this system is tokay@ptd.net --feel free to use to send photos and questions also.
A way to avoid this is to post to the forum and I can answer quickly wihtout any problems. ^_^
Thanks
