The reason for so many photos of the same species-such as the Eastern Gartersnake, is because animals sometimes vary in pattern and colour from region to region or from one population to another.
The all species you can have albinos (lacking black) or Melanistic (being all black) or Axanthic (lacking yellow), Leusistic (all white but not an albino) and so. There are many variations in pattern as well, example, some Eastern Gartersnakes have no dorsal stripe (the one running down the middle of the back) most of them do but some do not. Variations in brightness of colour or pattern and in distinctness of the pattern also occur. Different colour phases are very common is some species and not in others, example: Timber Rattlesnakes have colour phases Black to Yellow and anywhere in between.
By showing as many variations as possible I hope to make identifying animals easier for you.
If you still don't see the animal here, then you can always e-mail a photo to me for Identification. Send them to tokay@ptd.net or you can join the site and post your photo in the forum for Identification. I get the most questions about snakes but you can post any animal native to PA and I will find out-if I don't know (as with some insects) I will find out at the least the family in it in and if they are harmful or dangerous in anyway.
Just one word to the wise-If it has teeth-it can bite! This is not to say they will or want to-but use caution.
*Small side note-Sometimes you will come across animals NOT native to PA-animals that have escaped or were turned loose by their owner for any number of irresponsible reasons. You can also send photos of those for identification. Sightings of non-native animals do occur with anything from exotic birds to exotic mammals. Nothing surprises me anymore.
